The DARPA Grand Challenge is a competition for driverless autonomous robot cars. DARPA has held two such events to-date. The $1 million offered in 2004 went unclaimed when the best performer failed within 7 miles of the start of a 142 mile course in the desert. Stanford University won the 2005 Grand Challenge and Austin Robot Technology’s all-volunteer team made it to the semi-finals.

The next event in the DARPA Grand Challenge series is the Urban Challenge, to be held in November of 2007 with vehicles competing in a mock urban environment negotiating traffic circles, stop signs, merging into traffic and parking. Austin Robot Technology and The University of Texas at Austin are gearing up to compete again in 2007.

Austin Robot Technology’s team members will discuss the challenges faced in building an autonomous robot vehicle and what it will take to be competitive at the Urban Challenge. The presentation will include a discussion of the processing requirements for real-time vision and how the integration of graphic processing units into CPUs will make possible low-cost vision sensors. The team’s autonomous SUV will be on-site at the entrance to the Thompson Center.
